The Auto-Reflex(Autorex in Japan and Revue Auto-Reflex in Germany) was the first ever auto-exposure focal plane shutter 35mm SLR. Sort of a big deal at the time.
The Auto-Reflex(Autorex in Japan and Revue Auto-Reflex in Germany) was the first ever auto-exposure focal plane shutter 35mm SLR. Sort of a big deal at the time.
But from its launch in 1965 to its discontinuation in 1968 ahead of the Autoreflex T, Konica included the addition of a feature that truly set it apart - a frame size selector, a clever little mechanism that changes the film advance gearing and drops in a mask over the film plane, letting you bounce between full-frame landscapes and half-frame portraits on the same roll.
Overall, it's well-balanced(if a bit heavy), the design feels perfectly of its time, controls are stripped down to just what you need, and most fall right where your fingers expect them. It’s clear Konica was aiming to make a serious mark here.
I apologize in advance to the lab techs who have to scan these rolls
This camera is built like a tank. Not only is the metal chassis thicker than anything else I've worked on but the timing and internal mechanicisms work like new.
My particular issue was with getting power to the light meter. The PX625 battery had been left in the camera and swole to a point where it broke the plastic housing it rests in. A little battery juice had leaked but thankfully hadn't made it's way to the wiring so a q-tip with distilled white vinigar and some IPA cleaned up the whole area pretty thoroughly.
I removed the old shattered housing and desoldered the loose negative wire from the nickel tab that contacts the battery. A quick search and I found a replacement model, added a registration hole for the screw on the negative tab and had the library print it for free.

Frans' BAT43 Adapter
Got everything soldered back up, replaced the light seal foam, drilled out the mounting holes on the print and the fit was perfect. Frans de Gruijter's BAT43 adapter allows me to use a 1.5v SR44 silver battery in cameras that require the 1.35v PX625 mercury style by using a Shottkey diode to lower the output voltage to 1.35v ± 7%. Frans doesn't have a website but can be reached by email at battery.adapter@online.nl
